Community service as an alternative to military service
At the first Youth Session in 1991, the young people demanded the following in a petition: "We want a free choice between community service and military service for men and women. This community service is compulsory for men and voluntary for women as long as equality is not yet realised. Community service may not be ordered as part of a criminal sentence or after an examination of conscience." In 1996, five years later, the new Community Service Act allowed men to perform alternative community service. However, free choice between the different services was still not possible and was only introduced years later (see 2009).
